THE IDEA FOR A FIELD HOUSE first came about when our client wanted to build an indoor batting cage on the sloping site behind their Connecticut home. As we discussed ideas with our client, a couple with three boys, it wasn’t long before we were including bowling lanes, a squash court, an infinity pool, and a spa-like changing room. We designed the batting cage with a turf floor and retractable net so it can easily be used for soccer, lacrosse, or as an indoor running track. There are living spaces, as well, including a kitchen and great room with large, retracting doors that open onto a poolside terrace. The three-story field house is a fun, modern contrast to the main house, a brick Georgian Colonial, which we also renovated.
